Getting to Zanzibar
Zanzibar can be reached by plane from Dar es Salaam on mainland Tanzania. ZanAir,
Precision Air and
Coastal Aviation have daily flights between Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam and Arusha.
Air Tanzania has a
few flights weekly between Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar. There are direct international connections with
Kenya Airways via Nairobi.
There is also a possibility to go by ferry from Dar Es Salaam.
to Stone Town. There are regular
services using hydrofoils, catamarans and dhows. Ferries from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar depart
daily at 7.30am, 10.30am, 12.30pm and 4.00pm. All take one and a half hours. and cost around
US$35/40.
Departures from Zanzibar are daily at 7.00am , (8.00am on Sunday), 1.30pm,4.00pm and 10.00pm
(arriving before dawn the following day). The only thing you should pay is the ticket price
(which includes the US$5 port tax). Avoid all touts offering to sell 'doctors certificates',
departure taxes etc.! Bookings for all boats can be made at the ports in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.
In Dar es Salaam the nonresident ticket window for most boats is opposite St Joseph's Cathedral near
the Flying Horse sign. Alternativly, ferry tickets can be booked through a number of travel agents,
one day in advance at the earliest. Another slower boat departs Dar es Salaam at 1.00pm Tuesday to
Saturday and Zanzibar at 10.00pm Monday to Friday (approx US$20). Booking office for this boat is
located on Chagga St (Dar es Salaam).
