Vaccinations
Professional advice should be sought from a medical practitioner with an interest in travel medicine. As a guideline the following vaccinations are recommended for both Kenya and Tanzania : Hepatitis A, yellow fever (often asked for at border crossings), typhoid and malaria profylaxis. Ensure that immunisation against tetanus, diphtheria and polio is up to date. In addition, vaccination against travellers diarrhoea may be considered. Diseases for which the risk is considered low in Kenya and Tanzania are cholera, Hepatitis B and rabies. Many domestic animals in these areas carry rabies, and therefore urgent medical attention should be sought if bitten by an animal eg. dog. The risk for Japanese encephalitis, tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and meningococcal meningitis is considered to be negligible in these areas.

Malaria profylaxis
There is a high risk of acquiring malaria in all of Tanzania and much of Kenya, with the exception of Nairobi. Those antimalarials recommended for use in Kenya and Tanzania are combination atovakvon/proguanil (Malarone), meflokin (Lariam) or doxycycline. It is worth consulting a medical practitioner with regards to choice of antimalarial medication.
